Alberta’s Water: Oil Sands Case Study

We were delighted to have Bradley join Navigate 2012 to discuss how water and energy are linked in our oil sands mining operations. Using his expertise in tailings research and reclamation Bradley highlighted how innovation is leading to safe and efficient operations of existing tailings ponds. Dave McKenna & Melinda Kondrat, Statoil Canada, Ltd.

We were fortunate to have two Statoil representative join us to discuss the ‘steam-assisted gravity drainage’ (SAGD) method of bitumen recovery from deep oil sands deposits, where steam is injected underground into the oil sands deposit to recover bitumen. The presentation provided an overview of the SAGD process, with focus on how water is used, innovative technologies to improve the efficiency in which industry uses and recycles water use of water in our SAGD facilities and touched on the creative sentencing project that they are fulfilling.

Sarah joined us to share her insights on aquatic monitoring in the Athabasca region. Speaking to how RAMP monitors both water quality and quantity to assess cumulative effects, sharing some of your recent monitoring results and showcasing how a multi-stakeholder environmental monitoring program contributes to a holistic understanding of development in the region, participants gained valuable perspective linking science, water and Alberta’s oil sands.
